Google has recently unveiled the world’s first ever self-driving car, with it being the first company to ever construct a car with no brakes, steering wheel or accelerator. However, everyone seems to be very confused about the whole idea, so here we have answered some burning questions that everyone seems to be asking:

 

What is it?

It is the first ever completely driverless electric car prototype built by Google. This car has actually been in the works for over 5 years now, with the company only just now coming to the point where they feel it’s developed enough to release a prototype.

Visually, it vaguely resembles a smart car with its tiny structure, having two seats and room enough for a small amount of luggage. Google have also given the exterior a rather bizarre looking appearance, with it sporting what they describe as a “very Googley” face, which is designed to make the car look cute, friendly and as unimposing as possible.

 

What does it do?

It can take people from A to B with absolutely no user interaction required. There is no steering wheel or manual controls of any kind, just simply a start button and big red emergency stop button located right in the middle of the two seats. The car can be summoned via a smartphone, which will signal the nearest Google car to where ever that person is. In the front of the car is a small touch screen, which displays the weather, the current speed, as well a small countdown to the vehicle moving or stopping.

 

How does it work?

The software controlling this driverless car has been named Google Chauffer. The software uses a large array of sensors and highly accurate digital maps to locate itself in the world. A GPS is used, just like normal cars, to gain a basic guide of the cars location, however, more advanced point radars, lasers and cameras are primarily used, with them being located all over the car to provide a 360-degree view.

The car’s programming can recognise the difference between objects, people, cars, road markings, signs and traffic lights, obeying road laws as well as allowing for unpredictable hazards, such as cyclists and road works.

 

Will I be able to get one?

Google has recently announced that at best, these cars will not be available for another 5 years, meaning that you have a while yet before you can simply sit back and enjoy the ride.
