Are you prone to outbursts of anger when driving? Have you had a few more knocks than you’d like? Making small changes to your driving style will not only reduce your chances of having an accident; it will also save you money.
Try following these 3 tips to being a safer, happier driver.
Stay Calm
This will be the most difficult one for some people, but our emotional state does affect the way we drive. If you are someone who gets wound up easily when driving, you are much more likely to have an accident. Angry people are less observant and more inclined to speeding and reckless decisions. Changing your mind set is the best way to control your emotional response to other drivers. Don’t dwell on other driver’s mistakes and stupidity. Just accept it happened, and move on.
Be aware
Always be aware of your surroundings. This doesn’t just mean the car directly in front and behind you. If you are aware of what’s happening a few vehicles ahead, you will be much better prepared to react to an incident. Check your mirrors constantly and position them properly to give you the best view of the space around your vehicle. It should go without saying that driving tired, or using your hands-free phone will reduce your alertness, so don’t do it if at all possible.
Give yourself Space
Leaving more space between your vehicle and others on the road will dramatically decrease your chances of accidents. If you are someone who tailgates when you think the vehicle in front is going too slow– please stop. If you spot another vehicle driving erratically, speeding, or tailgating, move safely out of the way. When queuing you should leave enough space that you can manoeuvre out without reversing.
